RLW, faust, bequeen, merzbow, nurse with wound, satori, konstruktivists, lee ranaldo: four years in 30 seconds.

four years in 30 seconds:
a collection of music from around the world

in 1997 the british label dirter promotions delighted and enlighted the world (or at least 1200 inhabitants) with a 10-inch-vinyl-album featuring an interesting cross section of 25 rather familiar avantgarde artists with some exclusively commissioned works, all clocking in at about (you guess:) 30 seconds. regathered on this compilation were the likes of ralf wehowsky (aka RLW aka eaRLyW, more of his music can be found in the KLÄNG part of this blog), merzbow (a 1982 track reappeared on a very private tape compilation and might be found here within the next few years), nurse with wound (more paratopic information in an earlier post) and 22 other as follows. in 1998 the album was released on cd with all 25 tracks played backwards as bonus tracks. this cd release was a limited edition of 1000 copies and is what you are going to listen to right here and now.

miles davis live in europe. manchester 1960. berlin 1967. vienna 1971.

the album miles davis quintet live in europe was released in italy in 1989. it holds two long and beautiful tracks. the first was recorded on the 4th of november 1967 at the philharmonie in berlin during the berlin jazz festval. 43 seamless minutes featuring miles davis of course on trumpet, wayne shorter playing tenor, herbie hancock on piano, ron carter on bass and the unbeatable tony williams on dreams. the second session was probably recorded on the 27th of september 1960 at the free trade hall in manchester, not on the 6th of october as indicated (the wonderful kind of blue pages are extremely reliable). miles davis can be heard with sonny stitt on alto and tenor saxes, wynton kelly on piano, paul chambers on bass and jimmy (not: jimmie) cobb on drums executing a long improvisation based on cole porter´s "all of you".

fred frith. guitar solos. 1991 cd version.

in 1974 fred frith released his first album guitar solos: eight improvized tracks for unaccompanied acousmatic and eclectic guitars. rather challenging even in those adventurous times, and it did not quite sell a million. i got my copy way back in 1975 for the equivalent of less than one euro and it was completely ruined and worn out in 1977. i loved this music and i still do.

so i was more than delighted when in 1991 recrec music in switzerland had the heart to give the people what they did not want or at least did not know they want: all eight tracks from the 1974 album, of course, plus the two frith tracks from"guitar solos 2" (a compilation with about 15 minutes each by g.f. fitzgerald, derek bailey, hans reichel and fred frith, released in 1976), plus the three frith tracks from the album "guitar solos 3" (a compilation album fred frith shared with henry kaiser, chip handy, peter cusack, keith rowe, eugene chadbourne, davey williams and akira iijima in 1979), plus five tracks recorded in 1988. find more information in the wonderful fred frith discography compiled by patrice roussel.

to keep the original aim and attitude of "guitar solos" the us rer megacorp re-released the album on cd without any bonus tracks in 2002 as part of the 8 cd package "become a friend of fred records". this edition is still available.

all 18 tracks are ripped to mp3 with 224 kbps and packed into a split archive with win.rar, including scans of cover, booklet, cd and inlay, of course. please be sure to download part one and part two into one folder and unpack. have fun.

friedrich gulda, ursula anders, günther rabl. liberation 1979.

friedrich gulda was born in vienna on the 16th of may 1930 and died untimely on the 27th of january 2000. most of you will of course know that he was a stand-offishly taken in interpreter of classical piano music, but some of you might not be aware of his excavations and disruptions he despairingly added to his bourgeois background to elude the regnant concept of upper class culture. closemouthed cracks at jazz in the late sixties of the last century and heavy-handed outbursts into double quoted "free improvisation" always were shadowed by his beethoven squeezed and stockhausen press-ganged cultural and historical backgrounds.

in 1971 friedrich gulda organized and curated the (very) international music forum at lake ossiach in austria. the invitation included not only weather report, tangerine dream and pink floyd but was extended to ethno-folk activists from behind the (in these times rather unmeltable) iron curtains throughout europe to musicians from india, suomi and tunisia to free improvisors not located within geographically or aesthetically restricted borders. the concept of "world music" was invented and baptized here and then. at the lake ossiach festival friedrich gulda met paul und limpe fuchs for the first time and he was instantly fascinated by their concept of free anima sound. the following years he tried to draw near their musics and tried using his well known name to draw free improvised music near to the perception of the classically cultivated class of listeners. (some rare anima might come your way with and without gulda in this here blog: please stay tuned.)

for a lot of reasons gulda and paul und limpe fuchs disbanded in 1977 or 1978. friedrich gulda then teamed up with the wonderful ursula anders on all kinds of percussion and some vocals (only very few traces can be found using the familiar search engines: and in this special case i do not know more than those or you) and
günther rabl on bass (replacing johann anton rettenbacher, who has nolens volens been part of the anima sound experiancation until then). some of the music of this late or at least later trio has survived. the four tracks on the liberation cd have probably been recorded in 1979: have fun.

for your listening pleasure i included two tracks that were recorded a few years earlier live in concert with anima on the 8th of october in 1973 including friedrich gulda on prepared clavichord, e-piano, recorder, cromorne and voice, limpe fuchs playing percussion, pedaldrums, (foot)zither and singing and paul fuchs on fuchsbass and fuchsharp, metal sheet sounds, reed-reeds, saw and other selfbendivices.

this is what you get:

01 - monologue I
02 - monologue II
03 - performance (listen directly)
04 - good night

05 - trinity I
06 - trinity II

(mp3 / 224 kbps / direct download / scans included)

the first edition of the german rough guide to jazz included the following words i wrote about friedrich gulda, anima, ursula anders and all the whys-abouts gulda ist ein arsch, aber ein ganz erträgliches....

and here is what i said:

[rs]

back to sing for free: danny and the dressmakers, alternative tv, the astronoughts, wilful damage, the sell-outs and more.

street level was a london recording studio that gave home to the anarchist hippie punk avantgarde that in the late seventies and early eighties of the last century evolved out of an undogmatic conglomerate of jamming improvisers and free music activists. loosely connected with veteran campaigners like the pink fairies, throbbing gristle, gong, colin potter, here and now, mark perry (ATV of course aka alternative t´television) and others literally hundreds of sensitive noise combatants and weird folk buskers aligned, played and recorded in the shelter of street level.

to share the music with their unconcious audience street level created (adequate and bona fide for those times, preposterous thirty years later) labels like "fuck off records", "wierd (sic!) noise", "organized chaos" and others to release mostly tapes and very few vinyl editions of obscure sonic aspects of revolutionary activism. the very first tape they released was "i´ll be back to sing for free again soon", indexed as "FUCK OFF 1 (STEREO)" and this is what you are about to listen to, of course. you may find some information on some of the artists involved on the aforementioned site of street level, some links and complementary information will be added whenever i find some and your complementing comments are very welcome.

street level and all artists involved encouraged every body to copy their releases and to disperse and distribute them for free or at leat not exceeding prime cost. so spurensicherung shares a second generation copy with you.

martin rev and alan vega. suicide live in hamburg 1978.

martin rev and alan vega formed suicide in 1971. they obviously found their inspiration in the likes of velvet underground and the silver apples, but even more obviously they influenced and imbued the new and upcoming generations of psychedelic punks in music, style and attitude: wire, television, the 39 clocks, the jesus and mary chain, deutsch-amerikanische freundschaft, soft cell, spacemen 3 and many more of course. martin rev and alan vega still seem to walk this earth.

12 days after their legendary riot gig in brussels suicide visited hamburg on the 28th of june in 1978 for a very short concert. only four tracks of an audience recording seem to have survived throughout all those years: here is a second generation copy of that tape.

you may listen to adorable versions of
  • rocket usa
  • cheree
  • harlem
  • 96 tears
in rather airless sound quality.

spirit 1969 and 1992. live and promo.

when we was young: oh, so very young: we were psychedelic punks: and we used to love wire, danny and the dressmakers, the 39 clocks, nico päffgen, the thunderbyrds, paranormale tonbandstimmen, the church of lennon and cale spedding pistols, marc bolan, lol coxhill and spirit. yes: spirit were one of the very few bands to survive the sixties and to be some thing like important to the seventies psycho beats. only a few days later we discovered thousands of other truthful minds. more no fun at long last.

today you might want to listen to eight tracks the spirit recorded on monday the 1st of september 1969 at the texas international pop festival. this "oh boy"-cd is way too short, of course, but no more sounds seem to be bequeathed from these days.

listen to: (1) fresh garbage, (2) elijah, (3) improvisation, (4) ground hog, (5) grammophone man, (6)dream within a dream, (7) i got aline on you and (8) aren´t you glad. randy california (guitar and vocals), ed cassidy (drums), john locke (keyboards) (?), mark andes (bass) and jay ferguson (vocals, percussion) (?). listen, please.
