this ain't no harsh noise, honey, this is the coulty and knitternish new zealand wave of experrymintall snoudexcapes from the mid-nineteeth of the last centurray, vary foundlay and benign. but it's not harshless, annieweigh.

the rain of course was one of many projects the great peter stapleton was involved with, and the shadow ring surrounded bruce russel and his merry pranksters. both albums can be found on discogs, one is very expansive by the time being, the other one is ignored coumpletely. 

so let us start with the album sediment by the rain from 1994.

the sun ra arkestra - fondation maeght nights; volumes one and two; august 1970

the mighty sun ra arkestra live in france, recorded on the 3rd and 5th of august 1970 at the fondation marguerite et aimé maeght in saint-paul-de-vence. these performances have been released on vinyl in 1971 on the french shandar label, and got lost and rather rare immediately. they have been rereleased legally and as (semi-)bootlegs both on vinyl and cd quite a few times in the following years, but seem to be hard to find by the time being. 

for your listening pleasure i compiled my 1991 jazz view versions of these recordings into one big file that sums up as a 76-minutes-compact-disc with all information you might need at first bite, though some additional information may be found by following the given links to discogs.

sun ra live in stuttgart at jugendhaus mitte on the 19th of june 1984

gooooood. when i found this tape in the heritage of the stuttgart postfluxus artist albrecht/d. i instantly knew that you would want and need to hear it. in 1984 the stuttgart jugendhaus mitte (central youth centre) was closed to be re-built and re-constructed; as a substituting replacement a biglarge circus tent was set up on an empty ground/space/place rather close to the original venue, and this was the place the sun ra arkestra occupied on the 19th of june 1984 and every body who counted themselves as being a part of the stuttgart avantguarde was there: i saw most of the members of zimt, heute, frauenklinik, x-cezz, die mütter and no sports; i saw wendelion niedlich and buch-julius; and i saw albrecht/d. of course, who recorded the complete concert on one of his many portable tape recorders. and this is what you are going to hear right now: 90 minutes of sun ra live in stuttgart.

the wholy would wise web does not know all too much about this concert, but iat least i found a rather questionable tracklist somewhere in there. the order of the tracks seems to be correct, but they omitted some twenty minutes of free improvisation split over throughout inbetween the tracks. but nevermind; as a provisionaric framework the setlist is absolutely bearable and liveable. i split the 90-minutes-tape into two tracks with some 45 minutes each to leave the decision for the appropriate sound storage medium up to you.

sun ra on earth and back again: two botch tapes from 1982.

did you ever wonder why the tapeography of the saturn net describes the two tapes "sun ra on earth" and "sun ra live in berlin" as "poorly edited private recordings with poor sound"? here you can hear that they are absolutely right. even hardcore collectors and obsessive completists might not listen to them more often than once or thrice. i bought them in the early eighties directly from the source and i spent a lot of money on them. so these are rather lousy first generation copies for your pleasure anyway.

both tapes probably were recorded in west berlin on the 22nd or/23rd of july 1982, though an other source claims "sun ra live in berlin" to have been recorded on the 24th of july 1982 in mannheim. both tapes probably are starring and featuring the arkestra with sun ra on piano, synthesizer and vocals; ronnie brown on trumpet; longinieu parsons on trumpet; tyrone hill on trombone; marshall allenon altosax, flute, kora and percussion; john gilmoreon tenorsax, clarinette, percussion and vocals; eloe omoe on altosax and bassclarinette; james jacson on bassoon, flute and ancient egyptian infinity drum; danny ray thompsonon baritonsax; hayes burnett on bass; eric "samurai" walker on drums; tommy hunter on drums; clifford jarvis on drums; june tyson singing and beverley parsons, carla washington and greg pratt dancing on stage and through the audience.

the sun ra tapeography 1981-1985 is keeping and providing additional information on both tapes. you will find them listed as "T82.7.22. Sun Ra on Earth" and "T82.7.23. Sun Ra Live in Berlin". the music is ripped with very old and appropriate equipment from tape and compressed to mp3 with 192 kbps. the tracks are about 30 minutes each.

and as a bonus track (for the chosen few who scrolled down here:) here is a recording dating from the 18th of august 1933. sun ra was 18 years old then and he is not even rumoured to have played on it but it seems to be proven that he co-authored and arranged the tune. you can here clarence williams on piano, ed allen on cornet, cecil scott on clarinette and floyd casey on washboard:
