sediment and wax-work echoes: some frisky new zealand noise from 1994 and 1996: the rain and the shadow ring

this ain't no harsh noise, honey, this is the coulty and knitternish new zealand wave of experrymintall snoudexcapes from the mid-nineteeth of the last centurray, vary foundlay and benign. but it's not harshless, annieweigh.

the rain of course was one of many projects the great peter stapleton was involved with, and the shadow ring surrounded bruce russel and his merry pranksters. both albums can be found on discogs, one is very expansive by the time being, the other one is ignored coumpletely.

so let us start with the album sediment by the rain from 1994.

the rain were peter stapleton on drums, synthesizer and electrone=icall devices, kim pieters on bass, organ and toys, and danny butt on guitars and ecklecktronicks.

ALTERNATIVE TV - the 1977 industrial sessions featuring genesis p-orridge, carol newby and tremble the dog, and live at the rat club in september 1977, plus some more

do i really have to repeat all of the story of mark perry and alternative t' television, alternative television, alternative tv and ATV? no, i don't. history may repeat its beautiful selves all over and over again in all its farced glory; but i don't. so for today you will get to hear the so-cold industrial sessions atv executed at the throbbing gristle industrial studios better known as the death factory at 10, martello street in london in 1977, one of their live actions at the london rat club recorded by genesis p-orridge in september 1977, and some sounds from a 1979 live concert. let's go.

please note: most of the music in this=here blog has been deleted by some fnording idiots; but by the time being all files in this=here post are available. please enjoy.

first of all we got the industrial sessions, recorded in april 1977. you can hear mark perry on vocals and drums, alex fergusson on guitar, and genesis p-orridge helping out on bass and drums; and sometimes in the background you can hear chris and cosey and tremble dog commenting on what's happening in the death factory. this is raw and pure and a lot of fun. though the wonderful blog die or diy shared these recordings in 2014 as mp3s at 192 kbps i decided to re-share them with the world as 320-kbps-mp3s, and whattzmore i decided to include some scans of the booklet.

so here we go:

01 - love lies limp 1:45
02 - love lies limp 5:02
03 - "...fuck up..." 0:26
04 - british kids 2:48 (listen directly in your browser)

10 - life 3:05
11 - tremble the dog 0:35
12 - "...i was hitting him, like..." 0:46
13 - "...a lot of gaps on this tape..." 0:57
14 - alternatives to nato 6:14
15 - more porridge 0:43 (listen directly in your browser)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

as the last track of the industrial sessions cd was recorded live at the rat club in london in september 1977 and was not included on the cd live at the rat club i decided to include that perticular cd ass well for your listening pleasure.

you can hear mark perry on vocals, guitars and tapes, alex fergusson on guitar, chris bennett on drums, and tyrone thomas on bass; genesis p-orridge was in the audience and recorded this concert on his cassette tape recorder.

02 - love lies limp
03 - my hand was still wet (listen directly in your browser)

you can hear mark perry on vocals and guitars et cetera, dennis burns on bass, dave george on drums, and anno wombat from here and now on woodwinds and some more. this is what happened live at the greenwich theatre in spring 1979.

1979. anti-faschistisches festival in west-berlin: ätztussis, salinos, auswurf, katapult. echt. so namen.

(...please don´t let me be misunderstood: the fine art of anti-fascism unfourtunately only experiences a very short tradition in germany (the fine art of anti-fascism unfortunately experiences an all-too-short tradition: activists tend to treat nazis right on their heads without trying to destroy the still active and living culture of nazi-structures that built the long gone federal republic of germany) and though today it seems like nazis are a minority not being worthy of protection they still are occupying the heads of the majority of the german population.

in 1979 the anti-fascists not only tried to pogo on individual nazis but tried to completely smash the german federal sytem. unfortunately they failed, broke down, shipwrecked and fizzled. but anyway, the political prisoners in the berlin can (joint, nick, slammer, stir?) were flooded with solidarity you can listen to: some 20 german punk bands, activist comedians and explorers of sounds gathered together on an hgv-truck and tried to tear down the walls using a pa fed by a standby set. strange days, indeep.)

01 tagesschau
02 st 42 - auschwitz lebt
03 oneway-subway - never
04 salinos - kleptomane
05 blind passengers - so hab´n se ihn
06 auswurf - tod
07 resisters - keep your mouth shut
08 helga goetze
09 bernd lüdke - mein vater wird
10 hansa-a-plast - was tun wenn es brennt
11 ansage aufruf uprising call
12 meniscus - benachteiligt
13 hans jankowski - solange noch
14 fronttheater - gorleben-lied
15 blässe - gegen die bvb-typen
16 ätztussis - schlag zurück
17 katapult - feuer frei
18 katapult - angst
19 katapult - mauer-power

the door and the window, david toop, mark perry, nag and the casual labourers: free improvized punk 1979

i always thought these recordings were part of the street level universe, but obviously they are not. the tape "what happens when we sing a song?" was recorded live at the LMC (london musicians collective) probably in 1979 and distributed for free or at prime costs under the licence of copyleft. every body in fact was encouraged to copy and to share these recordings. this very friendly anachistic tradition shall be continued here. you can listen to one hour of free improvized punk incorporating and ruminating new old school academical klangforschung (experimental audio research for your pleasure) and old new school protest singing and songwriting. all here. all hear.

this is what you get: the door and the window were bendle, nag, giblet, mark perry, david toop and brass (including roddy disorder and some not named); nag was nag with david toop and giblet; the casual labourers were bendle, sue, dave morgan, tony clough and ashleigh marsh; mark perry was mark perry with dennis burns, dave george and sam transmitter. the sound quality changes from weird to awful. great.

part one: (mp3/192kbps/43mb)
the door and the window - pokerville
nag - in the road / oh bondage up yours
the casual labourers - eanna is returning / out of control / something from nothing

part two: (mp3/192kbps/43mb)
mark perry - death looks down / sound of music / sorrow cried blood
the door and the window - lust / swinga

an extended german re-mix of this text can be found here: (for technical reasons split into) part one and part two.

back to sing for free: danny and the dressmakers, alternative tv, the astronoughts, wilful damage, the sell-outs and more.

street level was a london recording studio that gave home to the anarchist hippie punk avantgarde that in the late seventies and early eighties of the last century evolved out of an undogmatic conglomerate of jamming improvisers and free music activists. loosely connected with veteran campaigners like the pink fairies, throbbing gristle, gong, colin potter, here and now, mark perry (ATV of course aka alternative t´television) and others literally hundreds of sensitive noise combatants and weird folk buskers aligned, played and recorded in the shelter of street level.

to share the music with their unconcious audience street level created (adequate and bona fide for those times, preposterous thirty years later) labels like "fuck off records", "wierd (sic!) noise", "organized chaos" and others to release mostly tapes and very few vinyl editions of obscure sonic aspects of revolutionary activism. the very first tape they released was "i´ll be back to sing for free again soon", indexed as "FUCK OFF 1 (STEREO)" and this is what you are about to listen to, of course. you may find some information on some of the artists involved on the aforementioned site of street level, some links and complementary information will be added whenever i find some and your complementing comments are very welcome.

street level and all artists involved encouraged every body to copy their releases and to disperse and distribute them for free or at leat not exceeding prime cost. so spurensicherung shares a second generation copy with you.
