this is not this heat: charles hayward with the radar favourites in 1974 and with quiet sun in 1975 and even with coil later on

before inventing all this praepostpunknoise with this heat in 1978 charles hayward was a very prolific drummer playing with phil manzanera's quiet sun in the early seventies (unfortunately none of their recordings taken before the january 1975 reunion seem to have survived) and playing and recording with the henry cow offspring radar favourites in 1974.

for your listening pleasure i compiled the eponymous radar favourites album recorded in 1974 and produced by michael king for the release on reel recordings in 2010 and the bonustracks that can be found on the 2011 expression records release of the 1975 quiet sun album mainstream (yes, just the bonustracks; i guess you've got the album anyway) and two tracks charles hayward recorded with coil in london sometime between january 1988 and october 1990. you may listen to some of the tracks right here in this post, and you can download the complete compilation way down below.

first of all there is the radar favourites album from autumn 1974. we got geoff leigh on reeds, cathy williams on keyboards and singing, g.f. fitz-gerald on guitars, jack monck on bass, and charles hayward on drums.

01 - peggy delaney's hothouse tinkers (listen directly)
02 - umbrella walk
03 - trees and tanks (listen directly)
04 - blues for henry
05 - blastest (listen directly)

second of all there is the quiet sun with bill maccormick on bass, phil manzanera on guitars, dave jarrett on keyboards and charles hayward on drums. the album mainstream was recorded and released in 1975, the recording dates of the bonustracks unfortunately are not mentioned.

06 - years of the quiet sun
07 - TROT
08 - R.F.D.
09 - R.F.D. part 1 (listen directly)

and third of all we got coil from their wonderful album love' secret domain. charles hayward is playing drums on two of their tracks, one of the many links between free jazz, roxy music and throbbing gristle.

10 - things happen
11 - love's secret domain (listen directly)

sediment and wax-work echoes: some frisky new zealand noise from 1994 and 1996: the rain and the shadow ring

this ain't no harsh noise, honey, this is the coulty and knitternish new zealand wave of experrymintall snoudexcapes from the mid-nineteeth of the last centurray, vary foundlay and benign. but it's not harshless, annieweigh.

the rain of course was one of many projects the great peter stapleton was involved with, and the shadow ring surrounded bruce russel and his merry pranksters. both albums can be found on discogs, one is very expansive by the time being, the other one is ignored coumpletely.

so let us start with the album sediment by the rain from 1994.

the rain were peter stapleton on drums, synthesizer and electrone=icall devices, kim pieters on bass, organ and toys, and danny butt on guitars and ecklecktronicks.

01 - dragonfly (listen directly)
02 - coma
03 - lost angel memory
04 - radii (listen directly)
05 - secrets of a rented island
06 - the blindfold test
07 - violet stains red
08 - corridor (listen directly)

coming up next of course is the shadow ring.

for this=here studio=action they were darren harris, tim goss and graham lambkin singing and playing every instrument they could get hold of, with a little help by s. fritz, the vitamin b12 and richard youngs.

and here they go=go:

01 - you're holding all your feathered stock
02 - catching sight / of passing things (listen directly)
03 - brush mice
04 - camel or carthorse
05 - recovered meat

07 - V.E.R.M.I.N. (listen directly)

tom newman: the fine old faerie symphony from 1977 featuring mike oldfield and neil innes, plus some bonus tracks for your pleasure

yes, tom newman. i bought his first solo album fine old tom way back in 1975 just because i knew that fred frith was featured on some of its tracks; and it took some time for me to realize that i could like mister newman's playful music just for its own playfulness. and it took even more time to realize the odd mike-oldfield-connection and more important than that his rhizomaticly rooted connections into the canterbury scene.
and eversince i started exploirating his mutual connexions to and or for within a lot of music that i liked i had to admit that i loved his nonavantgardexperimental approach quite a lot. the hermetic weirdness of his music is easily accessible for everyone.
tom newman released his third solo album faerie symphony on decca in 1977 as a collaboration with the likes of mike oldfield, neil innes, geoff westley and many others. in 1999 the german tempus fugit label rereleased the album including some bonus tracks from some of his other albums and some demo tracks. this version of the faerie symphony is what i am sharing with you right now.

la monte young wrote the original version of the second dream of the high tension line stepdown transformer from the four dreams of china in 1962 and added and complemented the melodic version of the second dream of the high tension line stepdown transformer from the four dreams of china in 1984. eight trumpets recorded their version of the melodic version of the second dream of the high tension line stepdown transformer from the four dreams of china in 1990 on the 9th of december: rich clymer, pamela fleming, james o'connor, james donato (left channel); ben neill, gary trosclair, rich kelley, stephen burns (right channel).

and no pop and yes pop: la monte young is (a) (tone) drone and soft machine and sonic youth would never had happened at all. your challenge / my mission.

the work. live in germany 1981.

art is not a mirror: it´s a hammer. when henry cow ceased to exist in 1978 the work was one of their many fragmented offsprings. tim hodgkinson (reeds, keyboards, de-composition) and bill gilonis (guitars, instant composition) teamed up with rick wilson (guitars) and mick hobbs (drums) in 1980. they released their first ep "i hate america" in 1981 and played a series of concerts all over europe. they spent the tenth of november 1981 in the very little bavarian village ampermoching where they appeared on stage in the legendary inn "zur post", a venue that had seen pere ubu, the gang of four, die haut and many other bands in front of an audience that most of the times outnumbered the passel of the aboriginal bavarian inhabitants of ampermoching.

with the exception of a short fade-out on side one of the cassette you are about to hear the complete performance they ececuted: almost one hour of the work months before their first album. you can still buy "slow crimes" through the mailorder at ad hoc records as well as other related items. i did. and i will not share any of them as long as they are still available. but these here recordings are totally unique...

fred frith. guitar solos. 1991 cd version.

in 1974 fred frith released his first album guitar solos: eight improvized tracks for unaccompanied acousmatic and eclectic guitars. rather challenging even in those adventurous times, and it did not quite sell a million. i got my copy way back in 1975 for the equivalent of less than one euro and it was completely ruined and worn out in 1977. i loved this music and i still do.

so i was more than delighted when in 1991 recrec music in switzerland had the heart to give the people what they did not want or at least did not know they want: all eight tracks from the 1974 album, of course, plus the two frith tracks from"guitar solos 2" (a compilation with about 15 minutes each by g.f. fitzgerald, derek bailey, hans reichel and fred frith, released in 1976), plus the three frith tracks from the album "guitar solos 3" (a compilation album fred frith shared with henry kaiser, chip handy, peter cusack, keith rowe, eugene chadbourne, davey williams and akira iijima in 1979), plus five tracks recorded in 1988. find more information in the wonderful fred frith discography compiled by patrice roussel.

to keep the original aim and attitude of "guitar solos" the us rer megacorp re-released the album on cd without any bonus tracks in 2002 as part of the 8 cd package "become a friend of fred records". this edition is still available.

all 18 tracks are ripped to mp3 with 224 kbps and packed into a split archive with win.rar, including scans of cover, booklet, cd and inlay, of course. please be sure to download part one and part two into one folder and unpack. have fun.
