a compendium of rare british jazz recordings from the sixties and seventies: trad dads, dirty boppers and free fusioneers, featuring john stevens, elton dean, robert wyatt, ian carr, john surman, gary windo, john marshall, kenny wheeler, lyn dobson, and even derek bailey

the first wave of the british free improvised music scene of the seventies and eighties of the last century was not just a handful of funny people playing plingplong brötztröt squeak boing dadadum to fool and disturb the audience, but their quest for an agrammatistic terminology and their perpetual piercing of conventional listening habits was deeply rooted in modern classical music and in the european reception and interpretation of american free jazz.

the album trad dads, dirty boppers and free fusioneers was the last great work michael king compiled and created for reel recordings in 2012 before his untimely death. and though it deals with semi-traditional music it is not an easy listening affair. for your pleasure i added a coeval and apposite track by derek bailey to make it even more disturbing. this is what you want, this is what you get.

i got bad taste: the weird and funny world of re-recorded hits featuring the liverbirds, the dovells, carl perkins, joey dee, the sweet, lou christie and many more

a very funny cd for a sunny afternoon, with or not without a lot of beer. a compilation of re-recordings of songs originally recorded in the fifties, sixties or seventies using as many members of the original groups as possible, featuring the rattles, the angels, the crickets, the comets and even the flamin' groovies and link wray.

most of these songs obviously were re-recorded at some time in the nineties or later, but most often there is appsoloudelay no evidence when, where or why they were recorded. burst never mymind, this coumpilation is just for the fun in and out of it.

some versions are rather close to the original version, some are much better than their predecessor, and some are completeredley over the top. there is no chance to get bored, so please don't. most of these records, by the way, i found in the cut-out-section of the dust bins of long forgotten record shops somewhere in germany, and nobody cared for them except me.

and contradictating the cover i did not include any recordings by bill haley and dion dimucci because their cheapotrashrecords are including their original stuff and so did not fit in the concept of this post.

so here we go-go:

01 - the comets - rock around the clock (live ca. 1993)
02 - the crystals - da doo ran ran (live ca. 1993)
03 - carl perkins - matchbox (???)
04 - johnny and the hurricanes - crossfire (???) (listen directly)
05 - the crickets - that'll be the day (live ca. 1993)
06 - roger mcguinn - turn turn turn (live ca. 1993)
07 - the angels - my boyfriend's back  (???) (listen directly)
08 - the sweet - alexander graham bell (1986)
09 - ? and the mysterians - "8"teen (live 1998)
10 - joey dee - shout (live ca. 1993)
11 - the rattles - meddley 1997
12 - the conturs - do you love me? (live ca. 1993) (listen directly)
13 - the tokens - tonight i fell in love (live ca. 1993)
14 - the dixie cups - iko iko (live ca. 1993)
15 - the original juniors - at the hop (live ca. 1993) (listen directly)
16 - carl perkins - rock medley (???)
17 - the dovells - you can't sit down (live ca. 1993) (listen directly)
18 - link wray - jack the ripper (live 1996)
19 - lou christie - the gipsy cried (live ca. 1993)
20 - ? and the mysterians - 96 tears (1997) (listen directly)
21 - the liverbirds - medley (live 1997)
22 - the dovells - bristol stomp (live ca. 1993)
23 - the flamin' groovies - let me rock (2017)
24 - the starclub ensemble - born to be wild (1997) (listen directly)
25 - little richard - keep a knockin' (???)

a very cheap budget trash bin compilation by the postpostpost-yardbirds, completely messed up by the label and here and now enhanced with some terrific bonustracks

just what the headline says: a low-budget production for the rummage table, a postpostpost incarnation of the late yardbirds re=interprenetating some of their gravest hits and endrotzusing some new songs in an almost acceptable way getting coumpletelay messed up by an everso=undercaring record company; it's a waste of trash and i love it. for your listening pleasure i added some bonus tracks i aleatorically picked up out off my collection; so please stay at home and have fun.

the tracklist you get with this trash can king is totally rubbish, the order of tracks is appsouloudelay wrong and one of the betterlater tracks is not even mentioned: there are 14 tracks on this cd, while the cover does only list 13 of them. my handwritten commands will show you the way. the recordings most probably were executed in 1995 by jim mccarthy, chris dreja, ray majors and terry crowe, but noboreday knows if it really happound.

this is what you want, this is what you get:

01 - for your love
02 - still i'm sad (not said) (listen directly)
03 - gotta go now
04 - winter (listen directly)
05 - shapes of things
06 - heart full of soul
07 - stand up
08 - good morning, little schoolgirl (listen directly)
09 - the stooge
10 - evilhearted you (listen directly)
11 - goodbye baby
12 - smokeless zone
13 - over under sideways down (listen directly)
14 - a madlay

and now for the bonus tracks; listen to them, they are really good!

15 - the downliners sect - ain't got you (listen directly)
16 - the downliners sect - bad penny
(from the 1991 cd "savage return". jim mccarthy is featured on track 16; track 15 is here because i love this version of the late downliners)

17 - i'm waiting for my man
(from "over the world"; this track was recorded at the shrine auditorium in los angeles, probably on the 31st of may 1968)

18 - paff bum
19 - questa volta (listen directly)
(live at san remo in february 1966; bootleg-versions from the early 90s; terrible!)

20 - glimpses
(some sound effects recorded in new york 1967)

21 - the in sound (listen directly)
(august 1967, for a us army radio program)

22 - think about it
(work in progress; london 1968)

23 - the train kept a-rollin' (listen directly)
(live in france; 9th of march 1967)

marc bolan and t. rex live at the birmingham town hall on the 23rd of february 1976: two versions of the same concert: one very loud, the other complete

it was early 1976 and punk began to lurk around when the futuristic dragon overran the united kingdom and gave the young gods a good kick in the ass. marc bolan was loud and harsh and funny, and he even says "motherfucker" at a certain point of the concert. and this was all that a poor boy needed back in those days.
unfortunately i could not find any additional information on this 2-cd-version of the concert they executed on the 23rd of february 1976 at the birmingham town hall (though there are a lot of single-cd-versions of this concert circulating amongst collectors), but the linernotes have it all. the double-cd once was distributed via the mail-order-shop on the site marc-bolan.org, but is no longer available as far as i can see; i bought my copy in 2010.
cd 1 was recorded on a portable tape recorder by the sixteen year old fee warner, situated very close to marc bolan's monitor on the stage, it is a very harsh and authentic recording, and for a lot of reasons only 13 tracks survived, while the semi-professional recording on the second cd brings you all of the 15 tracks t. rex played that evening as a rather clear but rather distant audience recording way back behind from the balcony of the town hall. so listen to marc bolan on vocals and guitar, steve currie on bass, gloria jones on keyboards and vocals, davy lutton on drums, dino dines on keyboards and tyrone scott on keyboards and vocal.

cd 1:
01 - 20th century boy
02 - jeepster
03 - funky london childhood
04 - new york city (listen directly)
05 - solid gold easy action
06 - children of the revolution
07 - teenage dream
08 - telegram sam
09 - debora / one inch rock
10 - ride a white swan
11 - life's a gas (listen directly)
12 - dreamy lady
13 - get it on

(mp3 / all scans included / direct download)

cd 2:
01 - 20th century boy
02 - jeepster
03 - funky london childhood
04 - new york city (listen directly)
05 - solid gold easy action
06 - children of the revolution
07 - teenage dream
08 - telegram sam
09 - debora / one inch rock
10 - ride a white swan
11 - life's a gas (listen directly)
12 - dreamy lady
13 - london boys (listen directly)
14 - hot love
15 - get it on

(mp3 / all scans included / direct download)

by the way you may find a third version of this concert on sugarmegs: insert "bolan birmingham" in the search box and go. and then don't go, but stay there to explore the wonderful world of sugarmegs with hundreads of townsends of live recordings by the likes of the grateful dead, the beatles, the velvet underground, patti smith, the 39 clocks, kraftwerk, the new york dolls, iggy pop, jimi hendrix and more and more and more. it's unbelievable!

i dig everything: early david bowie: singles and demos from 1964 to 1966, and the beckenham demos from 1968

two editions of early singles and/or demos stuffed together to fit on one cd with 77 minutes: a lot of stuff david bowie recorded between 1964 and 1968. first there are some 42 minutes of some (well-known) singles and some (not so well-known) demos that had been released as early on (1964-1966) in 1994 and have long since been gone, meanwhile changing hands for half of a monthly salary; if you are earning 800 euro a month, that is. and second of all we got the beckenham demo tapes that david bowie is said to have recorded in his living room in the december of 1968.
so let us start with 17 tracks david bowie recorded between 1964 and 1966 as davie jones, davy jones, as a member of the manish boys, and with the lower third featuring jimmy page and the buzz. you can figure it all out in the accompanying booklet.
so here we gogo:

01 - davie jones with the king bees - liza jane
02 - davie jones with the king bees - louie, louie go home
03 - the manish boys - i pity the fool
04 - the manish boys - take my tip (listen directly in your browser)
05 - davy jones - that's where my heart is
06 - davy jones - i want my baby back
07 - davy jones - bars of the county jail (listen directly in your browser)
08 - davy jones with the lower third - you've got a habit of leaving
09 - davy jones with the lower third - baby loves that way
10 - davy jones with the lower third - i'll follow you
11 - davy jones with the lower third - glad i've got nobody
12 - david bowie with the lower third - can't help thinking about me
13 - david bowie with the lower third - and i say to myself
14 - david bowie with the buzz - do anything you say
15 - david bowie with the buzz - good morning girl
16 - david bowie - dig everything
17 - david bowie - i'm not losing sleep

so these were the early-on-tracks; coming up next are the nine beckenham demos recorded in 1968. and though you might notice the recordings are a bit wobbly, at least that's what they are. and they are loveley, indeep.

so listen to:
(18) 1 - space oddity
(19) 2 - letter to hermione
(20) 3 - love song
(21) 4 - when i'm five
(22) 5 - live is a circus
(23) 6 - janine (listen directly in your browser)
(24) 7 - an occasional dream
(25) 8 - conversation piece
(26) 9 - the ching-a-ling song

that's okay, isn't it? in the .rar-file that you can download two or three lines down below you will find some more pictures and some additional liner notes. it's all too beautiful.

(mp3 / 320 kbps / all scans included / direct download)

and by the way: next door in my blog bewegnungen you can find the two-track-cd tv rebell featuring two 1967 david bowie songs in german, or what he conzittered as german annie weigh...

the yardbirds live in paris, san remo, bremen, stockholm, los angeles and london from 1965 to 1968

this cd seems to be a copy of a fairly worn vinyl version of the yardbirds bootleg "over the world" that was released in italy in 1990, but still it's great. when i bought this cd in 1992 none of these tracks were commercially available, and though in the meantime some of them are, the very special look-and-feel of this atmospheric compilation is still a lot of fun.
the yardbirds of course were keith relf (vocals and harmonica), chris dreja (bass and guitar), jim mccarty (drums), and either eric clapton (not on this-here compilation), jeff beck and/or jimmy page on guitar. though you will know most of these tracks by heart, some of these versions may have escaped your notice.
the most interesting track of course is their 1968 version of the velvet underground's "i'm waiting for my man". the yardbirds had shared the bill with the velvet underground on some dates in may 1968, and when they executed this version of "i'm waiting for my man" on tuesday the 31st of may at the shrine auditorium in los angeles when the velvet underground had just ended a three-day-residency (27th to 30th of may) at the same venue; so most likely and you can guess the rest. and by the way: find out and explore the way the first seconds of "shapes of things" have their origin in the riff and bridge of  "i'm a man"; that's really interesting.

so there you gogo:
